Thermistors can be divided into positive temperature coefficient thermistors (PTCR) and negative temperature coefficient thermistors (NTCR) according to their resistance-temperature characteristics. PTC is the abbreviation of PosiTIve Temperature Coefficient, which means positive temperature coefficient. NTC is the abbreviation of NegaTIve Temperature Coefficient, which means negative temperature coefficient. Among them, the positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTCR) includes two types: sudden change (step type) PTC thermistor and slow change (linear) PTC thermistor. Its mutation type (step type) PTC thermistor is subdivided into two categories, one is ceramic PTC thermistor (CPTC), which can be used after BaTIO3, V2O5, BN and other materials are mixed with semiconducting elements. The PTC effect can be found. At present, BaTIO3 series PTC thermistors are widely used; the second type is organic polymer PTC thermistors (PPTC), in which carbon black is mixed into polyethylene polymer materials to form the PTC effect. The BaTiO3 series PTC thermistor introduced here is a typical direct-heating step-type positive temperature coefficient thermistor. When the temperature increases above the Curie temperature, its resistance value increases in steps, reaching 4 to 10 orders of magnitude. The temperature change can be obtained by the current flowing through the thermistor, or by the input of heat energy from the outside, or the superposition of the two.

The characteristics of PTC thermistor are:
 

1. High sensitivity, its temperature coefficient of resistance is 10 to 100 times larger than that of metal, and can detect temperature changes of 10-6°C;
